What is this service?

Online Learning – This is a six week course consisting of weekly sessions that run from 10am until 11.30am on a Tuesday morning. Topics covered include:-

Week 1 – Introduction. Meet our Behaviour Co-ordinator. Find out about her personal experience as a parent, her work experience supporting challenging behaviour in education settings and her qualifications. Specific approaches to behaviour are discussed with an overview of the areas. Group etiquette will also be explained.

Week 2 – Emotional Regulation. What is emotional regulation? What is co-regulation? Why is it important? Identifying and recognising emotions. Communicating emotions. How to support emotional development and regulation. Stages of crisis and how to offer support. Examples of various strategies available.

Week 3 – Sensory Processing. What is sensory processing? An introduction to the senses. Hyper and Hypo responsiveness. Seeking and Avoidant. Sensory Registration. What is a Sensory Diet? Examples of possible hyper and hypo behaviours in all eight sensory domains.

Week 4 – Environmental Factors. Eating. Sleeping. School refusal. Legislation. Speech and Language. Importance of Visuals. Reasonable Adjustments and the SEN Code of Practice.

Week 5 – Autism. History, origins, and the spectrum of autism. Core features, assessment, criteria, and diagnosis. Gender presentations. HFA. Difference between ASD and ASC. Terminology. Early identification, late diagnosis, impact upon Mental Health. Masking. Theories and approaches.

Week 6 – Self-Care. Parental stress. Importance of self-care and ‘me time’. Physiological impact of stress, body battery. Finding balance. Being Judged. Q&A about anything across the six weeks.
